A Diabetics Discussion With His Doctor

Every Diabetic meets with his doctor to check on his good health. Below is a fictitious model discussion of a Diabetic with his doctor. Use it as a model when you meet your doctor.

Diabetic: When should I visit my eye doctor
Doctor: Visit a good eye specialist once a year at the least. In your case, your eyes are healthy, if you had developed eye disease due to uncontrolled diabetes, you would need to see one frequently.

Diabetic: Is my vitamin D level alright?
Doctor: You do not have kidney disease, touchwood. Just for your information, if you had stage three or more of this problem, you would require a PTH level and vitamin D levels.

Diabetic: Am I controlling the Diabetes well?
Doctor: I would be able to give you the answer to this after checking your haemoglobin A1C level. If the number is less than 7% it is alright.

DIabetic: My friend told me about seeing a nephrologist??
Doctor: Like I told you, your kidney is fine as the tests say, if they were not you would need to see a kidney doctor – also known as a nephrologist.

Diabetic: My friend who is also diabetic told me that I need to check sugar twice a day, is he correct?
Doctor: In your case, yes. Everybody has a different frequency of blood sugar checks needed depending on their condition. This needs to be worked out with their doctor.

Patient: Thank you, Doctor.
Doctor: Thank you.
