Cat Diabetes Facts

There are many variations in symptoms of cats who have diabetes. Often the symptoms of cat diabetes are confused with symptoms of other illnesses. This may lead to a non timely diagnosis of the illness. In cat diabetes, one of the prominent symptoms is an imbalance in glucose/sugar levels. Both in cats and humans if the insulin producing cells are damaged, the body cannot make enough insulin to take care of the blood sugar. The other kind of cat diabetes is when enough insulin is made but it is not utilized correctly.

Older cats are the ones commonly afflicted by cat diabetes rather than younger ones, although in some cases younger ones can get afflicted as well. Overweight cats are more likely to contract this illness and neutered male cats as well. If your cat urinates frequently, loses weight or appetite, walks on hocks or has cataracts, get it checked for feline diabetes.

A thorough physical exam is needed to diagnose cat diabetes, which include many blood and urine tests. If detected early, you can help your cat lead a normal life if you take care. Initially two injections of insulin may be needed per day which can be reduced later. Special cat food is available for diabetic cats. If untreated, diabetes can lead to coma and death.
