Dog Diabetes Management

Like humans, sometimes our canine friends are hit by diabetes. They may not produce the necessary amount of insulin or may be unable to utilize that insulin effectively. There are some options available to dog owners with diabetic dogs.

One thing to do in such cases is remove fat from the dogs diet. Measure the amount of food you are giving your dog each day and at each meal. Giving your dog small amounts of food several times a day is one way to level out his bloood sugar.

Feed your dog a good amount of fiber. This helps in maintaining a consistent level of sugar. In addition, exercise your dog regularly. With more exercise, less insulin is needed as there is less blood sugar to burn out.

Maintain a fixed schedule for your dog. Dogs are creatures of habit and maintaining regularity in his schedule always helps him. Feed him medicines regularly as well. If you need to give him an insulin shot, reward him with praise and perhaps a treat after the shot.

Another important thing to remember is that after taking insulin, the dog may experience very low blood sugar and start to shake. Keep some honey along for such times. With the right care, your dog can enjoy his life and relieve your stress, which ironically may be one of the causes of human diabetes.
