As your age increases, so do your chances of diabetes. In Type 1, the body’s immune system destroys pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Older people usually are afflicted by Type 2 diabetes though. In this case enough insulin is not being manufactured. Another scenario is that the body has become insulin resistant.

When you have diabetes, it is necessary to take care of your feet. These may develop injuries. Keeping feet clean and dry applying moisturizing lotion on your feet for unusual dryness is essential. Don’t be barefoot.

Do not eat too much at one go. Eat 5-6 small meals. Regularly exercise. Eat foods with fiber. These include beans, fruits, nuts and any other fibrous foods. There is a food guide pyramid developed by the US Department of Agriculture. Follow it religiously.

Eat sweet in moderation if you feel like. “Moderation” is the word to be kept in mind. Again managing diabetes is a function of how well you understand it. If you understand diabetes well, you have won half the battle.
